We know you don't believe your mother when she tells you how beautiful you are.
But would you believe a phone app? Ugly Meter, an app that rates users' attractiveness, recently shot up to the top of the list in the iPhone app store, just behind Angry Birds. Apps such as Ugly Meter, Beauty Meter, and Face Meter scan a user's face and measure the proportions and placement of their features.
The person's attractiveness — and the "magic" behind the ratings — is based on a mathematical equation called the "golden ratio" that defines perfect proportions not just in faces, but also in design, architecture, math, and more. We decided to put these ugly and beauty apps to the test with some famous and not-so famous faces. Ugly Meter seems to agree, rating Skarsgard as handsome.
The app that promises — "When your friends won't tell you the truth, the Ugly Meter will" — rated Skarsgard a low 1. The apps can be a bit confusing in how they rank faces. Some apps give a high numerical score — like a thumbs up — for being attractive. Other apps give a high numerical score — like a thumbs up — for being deemed ugly.
Ugly Meter not only ranks users, but disses or compliments them, as well. Others who rank low on the scale might get positive reinforcement. Beyonce Knowles received a perfectly beautiful score on the Ugly Meter, which is fitting considering People Magazine picked her as this year's most beautiful woman. All this hype about formulas that rate attractiveness leads to the question: Is beauty merely a digital equation?
A study by University of Toronto researchers in the journal Vision Research showed that the key to the ideal face was in measuring the spaces between the eyes, mouth, and ears.
Researchers asked subjects to rate the attractiveness of photos of women where distance between the features had been extended or shortened, while the features themselves remained the same. The experiment helped the researchers come up with the most attractive facial ratios, which they say correspond to a composite of the average face.People like being told that they look good, but is there any way to actually calculate surface-level attractiveness?

What Makes Someone Attractive? Am I Hot Or Not? Who should take the 'Attractiveness Test'?What you say you want in a mate doesn't always match up with what you actually look for, new research suggests, especially when it comes to how sexy your potential partner is. No matter how much people say they are looking for someone smart, who they can trust and laugh with, they have an unconscious desire to attain a sexually attractive partner — which applies both to men and women, at similar levels — the researchers found.
They even developed a quirky word test to figure out how important physical attraction is to a person, on an unconscious level. Now we can get under the hood with this quirky methodology to see what people actually prefer in live-interaction settings. In several lab experiments, undergraduate students completed the new computer-based word-association task assessing how much they associate physical attractiveness with an ideal partner. As words flashed on the screen, the participants had to pick those they associated with positive feelings.
Depending on how strongly the participant felt about physical attractiveness, words associated with sexiness that popped up during an "I like" trial were selected quicker. The researchers then compared these results with participants' responses to direct questions about important characteristics in a partner.
The two responses differed: No matter if students thought they really needed a hot partner or not, they ended up responding the same to the word test. The unconscious word test matched with what the students were actually interested in when they met a real-life person in speed-dating scenarios. This mismatch between what a person says they want in a mate and what they're really looking for could be one reason online dating sites sometimes fall flat even with perfectly matched profiles.
It could be possible to use this new tool to test how important physical attraction is to people instead of relying on their questionnaire answers and adjusting their matches accordingly. Or even just providing video-chat capabilities might increase the success rate of first dates.
